John Brooks
In addition to being a writer, based mainly in Japan and the San Francisco Bay Area, I’m a child sexual abuse survivor-activist and climate change activist, among many other things. It is my hope that my stories may help catalyze personal and societal healing and enlightenment.
A significant portion of my writing is devoted to a thorough-going examination of child sexual abuse, including how children experience such abuse, family and societal dynamics that contribute to such abuse, the kinds of challenges adult survivors typically face in their efforts to heal, and personal and societal healing through reason-based enlightenment. See, for example, Preludes, my story based on my experience of the horror of child sexual abuse and the challenges of healing, in a novella-length version available on the Kindle Store, iBooks, Barnes & Nobel, Kobo, and other ebook sellers, and a newer, novel-length version available on the Kindle Store. Also available on the Kindle Store is Through the Valley of the Shadow of Life, my second novel, exploring a man’s decades-long quest to free himself from the negative effects of sexual abuse experienced in the family environment of his childhood.
Anthropogenic climate change and its massively dystopian consequences if our thoroughly inadequate response continues is a central focus of a novel-length work in progress combining elements of speculative and literary fiction.
I was born in Athens, Georgia, grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, and earned degrees from Stanford University (B.A., English) and Vanderbilt Law School (J.D.).
